Alderman Mike Ferguson lives in Grandview, Missouri with his two children, Austin and Amber. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Charter Oak State College. He majored in Communications.
Professionally, Mike has managed the Human Resources department for one of America's fastest-growing companies and has managed recruiting, training and human resources operations for divisions of two Fortune 500 companies. He earned the Certified Staffing Professional (CSP) certification from the American Staffing Association in 2006.
He is the founder and President of Focal Point Communications (www.focalpointcommunications.net) and occasionally works as an adjunct instructor at a Kansas City-area college, teaching business and communications courses.
Prior to working in human resources, Mike was a journalist in the Kansas City area. His media experience includes television, radio and newspaper journalism. Today, he produces and hosts “Missouri Viewpoints”, a popular online public affairs TV program.
Politically, Mike’s experience includes both local and statewide work. Some of his accomplishments and experiences:
Named to the Missouri State Plan Committee by then-Secretary of State Matt Blunt in 2003, where he worked with representatives of political parties, special interest groups and various governmental organizations to develop Missouri’s plan for improving our election process. The Missouri State Plan Committee was created in response to the Help America Vote Act of 2002.
Selected to receive the “Champion of Freedom Award” by the Missouri Libertarian Party in 2003.
Appeared on national television several times. Mike has been on C-SPAN twice; once while hosting a Libertarian Presidential Candidates’ forum that he organized in 2003 and again when he was a nominating speaker at the Libertarian National Convention in both 2004 and 2008. Mike also appeared as a guest on the then-nationally syndicated “On Main Street” in 2002 to discuss financial planning and has been a guest on FOX News’ “Freedom Watch” which is broadcast on the “Strategy Room” online channel.
Was the Libertarian Party’s nominee for Missouri Lieutenant Governor in 2004. During that campaign, Mike became the first Libertarian candidate in Missouri’s history to be endorsed by a statewide newspaper. The Missouri State Post made the endorsement.
Appointed to the City of Grandview’s Transportation Committee by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen in April of 2005, where he represented the city’s Ward III until being elected to the Board of Aldermen. He was elected Chair of the committee in 2006, 2007, 2008 and again in 2009.
In April 2007, Mike was elected to the non-partisan Board of Directors of Jackson County Public Water District No. 1, where he represented a portion of the City of Grandview. He won the two-way race with over 72% of the vote.
Named to the Grandview Planning Commission by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen in January of 2008.
In 2008, he was selected to receive the Libertarian National Committee’s Thomas Paine Award for excellence in political outreach and communicating the message of liberty and smaller government.
Served as the National Field Director for former Congressman Bob Barr’s Libertarian Presidential campaign in 2008.
Mike was elected to the Grandview Board of Aldermen in April of 2009.
Mike is an avid baseball fan and a Missouri Tigers fan. His personal interests include reading and fitness. Mike’s favorite topics to read about are history (particularly biographies and autobiographies), economics and current events. The Fergusons attend Southland Baptist Church.
